“How do we know something as simple as a flower petal or as profound as a turning leaf possesses healing virtue? (…) I watched a dying man awaken to the color in a crimson maple. I witnessed the blood atonement flow deeply into his soul. When my father was well, he didn’t practice moments of reflection. To see creation induce his transformation made my conviction that healing is found in our natural surroundings grow. Although there were flower arrangements set about his chair, he found more comfort in the mystery of the autumn chill turning a tree scarlet red.”
“When I first found out I had cancer I moved my overstuffed chair from my office out in my living kitchen, a place in my home where my family spends most of their time, and just as important a room with a view of my rose bushes. It just so happened that when I started my chemo and radiation treatments, a mature Lady Banksia was covered with starlet-clusters of bright yellow blooms. (…) I was taken away by an array of sweetheart roses, Lady Banks and white rose blossoms that were as yummy as fat button mushrooms picked from the forest. Here in this spot I gazed upon my garden like a child with a glass ball that she shakes up, tips over and watches the snow fall to the sound of A Few of My Favorite Things.”
