$2.39 Painted Mountain Sweet Corn
Zea Mays This vigorous rainbow-colored sweet corn was developed for short, cool seasons. The sweet kernels are delicious and high in anti-oxidants. An avid organic breeder, Alan Kapuler crossed Dave Christiansen’s Mondana-bred original with the heirloom, ‘Luther Hill’, to make this beautiful corn that is vigorous, productive, and cold hardy. (Plants have been known to tolerate temperatures of 28 degrees on early summer evenings.) As a sweet corn, it has a high moisture content and is best for eating fresh as soon as possible after picking. Harvested ears can be saved for ornamental use, but will shrink some as they dry. 5’ tall plants, 2’ – 2 ½’ wide. This packet plants about 25 plants.
When to plant outside: Recommended. After average last spring frost.
When to start inside: 4 weeks before last spring frost.
Special Sowing and Germination Instructions: Corn is easy to grow from seed. For best results, provide optimal germination conditions in your garden including ½” planting depth and warm soil. Since pollination occurs from wind, seed should be planted in blocks. Sow 6” apart and thin to 1’ apart. This (su) variety does not need to be separated from (se) types. |
