Annual. Anise seeds have a sweet licorice flavor that is used in cakes, pastries and cookies as well as to complement duck, pork or fish. The leaves can also be added to salads, soups vegetables, and teas. It is traditionally used for medicial purposes, such as a digestion aid. Anise seeds were so valuable in ancient Rome, they were used to pay taxes! Anise prefers well-drained soil, moderate moisture, and protection from wind. When to plant outside: Needs warm soil temperatures to germinate - near 70 degrees F. Sow after average last spring frost. Needs 120 frost free days for seed to mature. Can sow during fall in the extreme south. When to start inside: For short season climates, start indoors 6-8 weeks before last spring frost. Anise has a long tap root and does not transplant well -sow in peat pots that can be transplanted directly outside. Do not let plants get pot bound." |
